        Untuk mengkonfigurasikan OSPF pada router, langkah yang harus dilakukan relatif sama dengan routing protocol yang lain. Administrator jaringan hanya perlu mengaktfikan OSPF, kemudian meng-advertise network yang ingin diperkenalkan kepada router lain. Namun network yang di-advertise harus dimasukan ke dalam salah satu area OSPF. Jika hanya menerapkan Single Area OSPF, maka harus dibuat minimal satu Area yang dinamakan Backbone Area, atau Area 0.

Bila pada routing protocol lain, saat akan meng-advertise sebuah network address harus disertakan subnetmask atau prefix, maka pada Router Cisco advertise dilakukan dengan menyertakan wildcard (kebalikan dari bit subnetmask).

          Routing Information Protocol (RIP) adalah sebuah routing protocol jenis distance-vector, dimana RIP mengirimkan routing table yang lengkap ke semua interface yang aktif setiap 30 detik. RIP hanya menggunakan jumlah hop untuk menentukan cara terbaik ke sebuah network remote , tetapi RIP secara default memiliki sejumah nilai jumlah hop maksimum yang diizinkan, yaitu 15 yang berarti 16 dianggab tidak terjangkau (unreachable).      RIP versi 1 menggunakan hanya classful routing, yang berarti semua alat di network harus menggunakan subnet mask yang sama. RIP versi 2 menyediakan sesuatu yang disebut prefix routing, dan bisa mengirimkan informasi subnet mask bersama dengan update-update dari route (classless routing).       Router bertugas untuk menyampaikan paket data dari satu jaringan ke jaringan lainnya, jaringan pengirim hanya tahu bahwa tujuan jauh dari router. Dan routerlah yang mengatur mekanisme pengiriman selain itu router juga memilih “jalan terbaik” untuk mencapai tujuan. Ada dua jenis router berdasarkan cara ruting-nya, yaitu Router Statis dan Router Dinamis.
